Run Jess Run

6 weeks ago I was diagnosed with a stress fracture. 6 weeks ago I quit running. And, 6 weeks ago I received some Island Boost in the mail. For the last 6 weeks it has sat on my desk, with its shiny, colorful, engaging packaging, just staring at me.

pretty. shiny. ooooo.
pretty. shiny. ooooo.

Why? Because Island Boost is a carbohydrate fuel product for endurance activities (those lasting longer than an hour which I’ve had to stay away from).

When I was finally cleared to bike ride, I headed straight to my desk and grabbed some Island Boost on my first 60 minute bike ride, a few days ago.
enjoying cute bike pictures during my injury. 🙂

Here’s the thing: Island Boost is a liquid, unlike many carb fuels which have a thicker, gooey texture and can be hard to suck down mid-race and can upset tummies (not mine, but I’ve heard stories…). That’s what makes it a unique alternative to what you might have used before.

Ok, now for the real life application: Mid bike ride, I reached into my bag, pulled out the Island Boost, and easily ripped it open with my teeth (extra credit point- I hate not being able to open something mid run). Want the real opinion? It went down smoooooooth. No gooey yuck in my mouth, just smooth passion fruit love. I liked it. I don’t hate the gooey stuff either, but I liked this other alternative. Plus, you don’t have to worry about finding water to wash it down. It’s made with water and coconut water, so it does the job for you. I’m saving my last one for a real long run in a few months to see how it settles in that situation. Right now it comes in three fruity flavors (with sweet names like Passion(Passion Fruit), Renegade(Blueberry Pomegranate) and Aspire(Strawberry Orange)), and their website says a chocolate one is in the works (fist pump)

it’s real tasty in the fridge.

Like the other companies I’ve done reviews for, Island Boost is a small, local (west coast) company, which I am all about. These small companies work hard to come with with exciting and innovative new ideas, and any way I can help them to get more credit out there in the world is a pleasure.

Disclaimer: Island Boost did provide me with some samples to try in exchange for writing this review. However, the opinions and facts in this post come straight from me. 🙂
